Case Study #1: She is Only a Child

                                                Severn Suzuki at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit

Today, we will read the transcript of Suzuki’s speech and we will annotate the speech.

Active Reading Checklist (BLM 1.2):

  • identifying important points;
  • writing down comments, questions, or connections;
  • indicating any unfamiliar vocabulary or confusing parts;
  • summarizing as you read the text;
  • see how this text fits together with other ideas in the course.

As we read Suzuki’s transcript, think about your purpose for reading.

What is the process through which an average young person becomes powerful and makes a difference in the world?  What steps does he/she take in his/her journey?  Also consider: Can anyone do it?

Create a hypothesis by imagining the steps someone like Severn Suzuki might take on the journey to achieve power and make a difference in the world? You might want to start with how she first became interested…

Case Study #2: Motivated to take Action

  • What are some reasons people get bullied?
  • In what ways might schools, administration, and teachers make bullying worse?
  • What would you do to improve your school, community, or the world if you had a million dollars?
  • How can media and social media help promote positive causes?
